Steering in the right direction

Mike Bennett; Principle Partner

Michael BennettMichael Bennett has spent his career in the Construction & Brewing industries. He started as an indentured pupil with Bovis, his early years being spent on surveying, construction project management, and by progression, construction general management.

This was followed by a series of senior appointments enabling him to acquire some 17 years experience as a Unit Managing Director, Divisional Director and Divisional Managing Director.

Success in this field eventually led to an appointment as Executive Assistant to the Chairman where he was deployed as the group specialist in business restructure and process reengineering , with particular emphasis on staff selection, motivation and development.

5 years were then spent with Whitbread PLC as their London & South East Property Director, responsible for the repair and refurbishment of some 1700 pubs.

This career journey has built a huge reservoir of practical knowledge as to the various stages an organisation can go through as it makes the journey from surviving to thriving; and often back again.

It has a created a wide and deep understanding as to the key drivers of individual and team performance; particularly when taking people through adversity and personal challenge.

These experiences have also allowed him to collect a portfolio of tools, techniques and processes to quickly bring clarity to any issue; and lay the foundation for improvement or resolution.

Working as a consultant for the last 16 years has helped him acquire clear understanding of the critical success factors for organisation’s as varied as Local Government, Education, Manufacturing, Media, Research and Insurance

Coaching and mentoring Chief Executives and Senior Directors, Planning, and Facilitating, complex meetings at a senior level is also a familiar part of his workload.

However in recent years his personal focus has been on the coaching and development of First Line Managers, who he believes are the key to raising productivity in any organisation. The greatest numbers of individuals within any organisation are controlled of First Line Managers, nominal investment in these individuals leverages huge benefits for the all stakeholders.

Whilst senior management can set the direction and light the way, traction, productivity and profit are a consequence of the day to day leadership and role model performance by First Line Managers. In his view they shape the days output of the organisation more than anyone else.

Clients have included, BBC, Siemens, Thales, Racal, Meggitt, Fluor Daniel Inc, Cunningham Lindsey, Fortnum & Masons, Kent CC, and Compaq EMEA; he has worked on assignments throughout the UK, Europe and the US.
